In the early afternoon of October 6, 2017, the North 25 housing complex in Trenton, New Jersey, was shattered by gunfire that ended the life of 58-year-old Wilma Rutledge. A Black female resident of Carver Lane, she was tragically caught in the crossfire of a shooting that also wounded a 14-year-old girl. Reports indicate that Rutledge was an innocent bystander in the violent outburst that occurred at the intersection of Carver Lane and North Willow Street.
Having lived in Trenton for 52 years after moving from Daytona Beach, Florida, she was a familiar and beloved figure in her community.
The brazen daylight shooting sent shockwaves through the neighborhood. Witnesses described hearing what they initially thought were firecrackers, only to realize the horrifying truth as the events unfolded. Rutledge was transported to a local hospital, but tragically succumbed to her injuries. The teenage girl, who was also struck by the gunfire, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The senseless act of violence left a community in mourning and a family grieving the loss of a woman who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
In the days and weeks that followed, a significant law enforcement effort was mounted to bring those responsible to justice. The investigation led to the arrests of several individuals. Among them were three men: Zion Williams, who was 18 at the time, Rahein McInnis, 32, and Togbah Kpehe, 24. Alongside the adult suspects, two 16-year-old males were also taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force was instrumental in apprehending Williams.
The group of suspects faced a battery of serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, and various weapons offenses. The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office pursued the case, eventually securing a 14-count indictment against Williams, McInnis, and Kpehe. The charges underscored the gravity of the crime and the indiscriminate nature of the violence that claimed the life of an innocent grandmother and injured a young girl. The legal proceedings sought to hold the accused accountable for the devastating impact of their actions on the victims, their families, and the wider Trenton community.
