In the summer of 1996, the city of Trenton, New Jersey, was gripped by a series of tragic events that would later be attributed to the actions of a serial killer. Among the victims was Deborah Ann Walker, a 37-year-old African American woman. Her life was cut short on July 29, 1996, when her body was discovered in a vacant lot. The grim discovery was made by a neighbor in the vicinity of the home of a man named Anthony Balaam.
Investigators were led to focus on Balaam due to the proximity of his residence to where Walker's body was found. As the investigation progressed, DNA evidence collected from the crime scene would definitively link him to her murder. Balaam, who came to be known as 'The Trenton Strangler,' targeted women in the Trenton area between 1994 and 1996. His method involved luring his victims, often women who were struggling with substance abuse, with the promise of drugs in exchange for sexual acts. These encounters would turn violent, ending in assault and strangulation.
Following his arrest, Anthony Balaam confessed to the murders of four women, including Deborah Ann Walker. In his confession, he detailed his process of manipulation and the rage and desire for power that fueled his violent actions. In addition to the murders, Balaam also faced charges for robbery and the possession of illegal weapons. After a lengthy trial, he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, with the stipulation that he must serve a minimum of 120 years before becoming eligible for parole.
