In the spring of 2017, a sense of hope was budding in the life of 22-year-old Manei Glover, a Black female from Trenton, New Jersey. Known to her loved ones as Nia, she was actively working to turn her life around, studying to become a nursing assistant and looking forward to the birth of her child. She had been living in Philadelphia but frequently returned to her hometown, maintaining close bonds with her family.
On the afternoon of May 25, 2017, that hope was tragically extinguished.
While sitting in a minivan with her father and grandfather in front of their home on North Hermitage Avenue, a vehicle pulled alongside and unleashed a barrage of gunfire. The unexpected violence shattered the quiet afternoon, and when the chaos subsided, Manei had been fatally wounded. She was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. An autopsy would later confirm that she was pregnant at the time of her death.
The brazen daylight shooting also left her 74-year-old grandfather with a gunshot wound to the neck and her 48-year-old father injured in the hip. Investigators later found a stolen vehicle they believed was connected to the shooting. Despite the recovery of the possible suspect vehicle, no arrests have ever been made in the case.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, with some speculation that it may have been a case of mistaken identity related to the family's recently purchased minivan. The killing sent shockwaves through the community, a stark reminder of the senseless violence that can erupt without warning. To this day, the individuals responsible for the death of Manei Glover and her unborn child have not been brought to justice, leaving her family with unanswered questions and the enduring pain of their loss.
