On the final night of 2017, Gladys Barrera, a 45-year-old Hispanic female, was fatally shot in Trenton, New Jersey. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on the 100 block of Brown Street as she and a male companion were returning from a church service. Barrera was pronounced dead at the scene, becoming the city's 24th homicide victim of the year.
Her 37-year-old male friend, who had been persuaded by Barrera to attend church with her that New Year's Eve instead of going to a
bar, was also struck by gunfire. He sustained a graze wound to the head and was treated at a local hospital before being released. He recounted that as he was opening the door to a residence, a loud shot rang out and Barrera collapsed.
The Mercer County Homicide Task Force immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Law enforcement officials canvassed the area for evidence and appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for Barrera's death. While the investigation commenced, authorities had not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the fatal shooting. The motive for the seemingly random act of violence remained unclear in the initial stages of the inquiry.
