In the early morning hours of July 30, 2021, the life of a vibrant 23-year-old Black transgender woman, Shai Vanderpump, was tragically cut short in Trenton, New Jersey. Known as a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, Vanderpump was discovered by police at a residence on Kelsey Avenue around 4:40 a.m., having sustained a gunshot wound to the face. She was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, but her injuries proved fatal, and she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.
The investigation into Vanderpump's death moved quickly, and by the following evening, authorities had a suspect in custody. Daniel L. Smith, a 36-year-old man from the neighboring town of Ewing, was arrested during a motor vehicle stop. He was subsequently charged with one count of murder and several weapons-related offenses in connection with Vanderpump's slaying.
Prosecutors also began looking into whether the killing was motivated by bias, a consideration given Vanderpump's identity as a transgender woman.
According to an affidavit, the events leading to the tragic shooting began to unfold hours before the police were called. Smith had allegedly been at the Kelsey Avenue residence with another woman earlier in the evening. Later, witnesses inside the home reported hearing a commotion in the hallway. In a strange twist, Smith himself was the one to call 911, claiming that someone had pulled him out of bed and that a person had been shot inside the house. However, his voice was later identified by a witness from the 911 recording. Further evidence emerged from security footage from a nearby YMCA, which reportedly captured Smith running through the parking lot and washing his hands in a puddle. After police located him at his mother's home and kept him under surveillance, he was arrested later that evening.
