In the quiet morning hours of a Sunday in Trenton, New Jersey, a tragedy unfolded that would cut short the life of a young mother. Stephanie Vil, a 34-year-old female, was found fatally shot near the intersection of Prospect Street and West Hanover Avenue on February 12, 2023. Her body was discovered lying in the street next to a vehicle that had sustained heavy damage.
She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after police arrived in response to a shot-spotter activation and multiple calls from concerned citizens.
The investigation into her death quickly focused on Jamar Leonard, a 38-year-old man with whom she shared a child. In the days leading up to the fatal shooting, witnesses reported that the couple had been engaged in several arguments. One particularly disturbing incident occurred just three days prior when Leonard allegedly kicked down the door to Vil's home after she locked him out. The turmoil between them apparently reached a devastating climax on that Sunday morning. A friend of Vil's was on a FaceTime call with her around 9 a.m. when the phone suddenly dropped. The friend heard a muffled sound and then saw the horrifying image of blood coming from Vil's ear. Another witness in the area reported hearing a man and a woman arguing, which was followed by the sound of a gunshot.
Following the shooting, Jamar Leonard was located at a local hospital. He admitted to being present when Vil was shot but claimed that another individual was responsible for her death. However, authorities proceeded to arrest and charge him with murder and several weapons offenses. It was discovered that Leonard had a prior criminal history that legally prohibited him from possessing a firearm. The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office filed a motion to detain him pending trial.
