In the fading daylight of a November afternoon, 19-year-old Shaela Johnson, a Black female, found her life abruptly and violently cut short on a street corner in Trenton, New Jersey. On November 27, 2018, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Johnson was near the intersection of Stuyvesant and Hoffman Avenues when a black Nissan Maxima pulled up. Two men, clad in black, emerged from the vehicle and opened fire in her direction.
The sudden eruption of gunfire sent Johnson running for her life, seeking refuge in a nearby corner store. Despite her desperate attempt to escape, she was struck multiple times by the hail of bullets and collapsed at the store's entrance. The assailants quickly got back into their car and fled the scene, leaving behind a chaotic and tragic scene with more than 20 shell casings scattered on the ground. Johnson was rushed to a local hospital in a private vehicle but succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
The brazen daylight shooting, captured on surveillance video, sent shockwaves through the community and was quickly deemed to be gang-related by city officials. The investigation that followed led authorities to a stolen 2012 Nissan Maxima, the suspected getaway car, which was found engulfed in flames just hours after the murder at the intersection of Howell and Franklin streets. In the months that followed, the Mercer County Homicide Task Force diligently pursued leads in the case.
Their investigation culminated in the arrests of three men. In April 2019, Nazier Francois, then 20, and Keith Hamilton, then 21, both of Trenton, along with Watson George, then 20, of Ewing, were charged in connection with Johnson's death. Francois and George faced the most severe charges, including murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy. Hamilton was charged with offenses related to the burning of the getaway car and attempting to cover up the crime, including aggravated arson and hindering apprehension. A grand jury later returned a 19-count indictment against the three men. The indictment also mentioned a fourth, unidentified male who was believed to have been involved. The legal proceedings against the three charged individuals commenced following their arrests and indictment, moving the case from the streets of Trenton to the courtroom as the justice system sought to hold those responsible for the death of Shaela Johnson accountable for their actions.
