The grim discovery was made on September 19, 1972, when a local dog returned home with a decomposed human forearm. This led authorities to the Houdaille Quarry, where the rest of Jeannette's remains were found atop a cliff known locally as 'the Devil's Teeth'. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, a definitive cause of death could not be determined. However, the coroner suspected strangulation, leading the case to be treated as a homicide investigation.
An autopsy revealed an unusually high amount of lead in her system, a finding that has never been explained.
The scene where Jeannette's body was discovered sparked sensational media coverage and rampant speculation. Some reports claimed her body was surrounded by strange objects, possibly of an occult nature, including makeshift wooden crosses and a coffin-shaped perimeter of branches. These details fueled theories of a ritualistic sacrifice, though law enforcement has denied the presence of a pentagram or mutilated animals at the scene. In September 2024, a magazine that had long covered the case stated they reviewed crime scene photos and found no evidence of occult activity.
