In the early morning hours of September 7, 2023, the life of 25-year-old Shanelle Stewart of Vineland, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. The young woman was discovered inside a vehicle in the 2000 block of Wheaton Avenue in Millville, having succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds.
Later that same day, an arrest was made in connection with the homicide. Alex Blocker, 34, of Bridgeton, was taken into custody by members of the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office and the Millville Police Department. Authorities have identified Blocker as the father of Stewart's two young children, a son and a daughter.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured a vehicle matching Blocker's following Stewart's moments before the shooting occurred.
Blocker has since been charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses. He is being held in the Cumberland County Jail pending a detention hearing. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Stewart's death is ongoing. Family and friends remember Shanelle as a quiet, hardworking, and admired young woman who was a shining star and a devoted mother.
