In the late hours of a Friday evening in Jersey City, the life of 24-year-old Resheed Wallace was tragically cut short. On May 10, 2024, just before 10 p.m., police responded to reports of gunfire at the intersection of Pearsall Avenue and Garfield Avenue. Upon their arrival, they discovered Wallace with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:25 p.m.
The Regional Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm that the cause of death was a gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
For two months, the investigation into Wallace's death continued, with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department actively seeking those responsible. A breakthrough in the case came in July 2024, leading to the apprehension of three individuals. The first to be taken into custody were two juveniles, a 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old male, who were arrested on July 11. The following day, 22-year-old Makiyy Randolph of Paterson was arrested on Gates Avenue in Jersey City after a brief foot chase.
The trio faced a litany of serious charges, including murder, felony murder, robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery, as well as weapons offenses. In a significant legal development, it was decided that one of the teens, 17-year-old Kaison Brown of South Amboy, would be prosecuted as an adult, facing the same charges as Randolph. The 14-year-old girl was charged as a juvenile with murder, felony murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, and weapons charges. The arrests brought a measure of progress in a case that had shaken the community, as the legal process to bring justice for Resheed Wallace began to unfold.
