In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Jersey City, the sound of gunfire shattered the calm on Wilkinson Avenue. It was April 13, 2021, and when police responded to reports of shots fired, they found 21-year-old Rodney Wallace suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body. Wallace, a male resident of the city, was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, but his life could not be saved.
He was pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m.
The shooting that claimed Wallace's life also left another man, a 22-year-old, with non-life-threatening injuries. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit, in conjunction with the Jersey City Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the violent encounter. The Regional Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that the cause of Wallace's death was the gunshot wounds he sustained, ruling it a homicide.
The investigation led to the identification of two suspects who were subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting. One of the individuals taken into custody was Naseem Rourk, a 20-year-old from Jersey City. He faced a string of serious charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses.
In a significant development, a second suspect, a 16-year-old male, was also apprehended. Members of the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Gang Intelligence/Violent Crimes Unit arrested the teenager inside a store on Old Bergen Road on June 10, 2021. The juvenile faced similar charges to Rourk, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder, for his alleged role in the death of Rodney Wallace.
