On the evening of Sunday, February 28, 2021, Christian Parra, a 34-year-old male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a BJ's Wholesale Club on Marin Boulevard in Jersey City, New Jersey. Responding to reports of a shooting at approximately 8:18 p.m., Jersey City Police officers discovered Parra with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 9:00 p.m.
The Regional Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound and classified the manner of death as a homicide.
Parra, a father of three, was remembered by his family as a motivational and kind-hearted person. His sister initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support his family, describing him as someone who could inspire others to achieve personal growth. His brother expressed the family's profound pain and suffering, stating that 'the life of a good man was taken in a moment's notice for no logical reasoning.'
The investigation into Christian Parra's death led to the identification of a suspect, Ariel Dumit. Dumit, then 35 years old and residing in New Port Richey, Florida, was arrested there with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. He was subsequently extradited to New Jersey to face charges related to Parra's murder.
Following a two-week trial, a Hudson County jury convicted Ariel Dumit on charges of murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. In August 2023, a judge sentenced Dumit, then 38, to 30 years in state prison for the murder of Christian Parra. The terms of his sentence require him to serve the full 30 years before becoming eligible for parole.
