On a tragic evening in Hampton, Virginia, the life of 24-year-old Dijonte Nash was cut short by gunfire. The fatal incident occurred on January 30, 2023, in the first block of Salisbury Way. When police officers arrived at the scene around 9:43 p.m., they discovered two individuals outside who had been shot. Dijonte Nash, a resident of Newport News, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The violence of that night also claimed two other lives.
The second victim, 25-year-old Destiny Layton, who was eight months pregnant, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. She tragically succumbed to her injuries the following day, and her unborn child also did not survive. The couple had come to the apartment complex to visit when the shooting occurred. According to a witness, it sounded like a machine gun was used in the attack.
In the wake of the triple homicide, the families of both Dijonte Nash and Destiny Layton were left to grapple with their profound loss. Destiny was remembered as a joyous and bright individual with a big heart, who was a graduate of Phoebus High School and left behind four other children. Dijonte's grandmother expressed the deep pain of his absence, noting that he would never get to see his daughters again.
As of early 2024, more than a year after the deadly shooting, no arrests have been made in connection with the deaths of Dijonte Nash, Destiny Layton, and their unborn child. The Hampton Police Division has stated that the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation and they are actively working to identify and charge those responsible. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in bringing closure to the case.
