In a quiet Danville, Virginia evening on Sunday, May 21, 2023, the life of 16-year-old Demarius Leshaun McLaughlin was tragically cut short. A student at Chatham High School, the young male was fatally wounded in a shooting that unfolded at an apartment complex on Johnson Street. First responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire and discovered McLaughlin suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Danville Police Department swiftly launched a homicide investigation, and their inquiries soon pointed to a suspect. Within a day of the fatal shooting, investigators publicly identified 18-year-old Jaivon A'Donte'z Jones, a resident of Danville, as the individual they believed to be responsible for McLaughlin's death. A warrant for second-degree murder was issued for his arrest, turning the case into a manhunt for the teenage suspect.
The search for Jones concluded on the evening of Monday, May 22, 2023, when he was located and taken into custody without incident by the Danville Police Department. In addition to the charge of second-degree murder, Jones was also charged with the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
