In the summer of 2023, a tragedy struck Alexandria, Virginia, cutting short the life of 29-year-old Eric Holmes Jr. On the morning of July 24th, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Holmes was in the 800 block of West Glebe Road, near a playground in a residential area, when he was shot multiple times. First responders found him at the scene and transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. A father of two, his death was the city's fifth homicide of the year.
In the immediate aftermath, the Alexandria Police Department launched an intensive investigation. They appealed to the public for assistance, specifically asking for help in locating a newer model silver Nissan Rogue with an 'Enterprise Car Sales' placard on the rear license plate holder, which was believed to have been used in the commission of the crime. Authorities encouraged anyone with information, including digital evidence like videos or audio files, to come forward and share what they knew, even offering an anonymous online portal for submissions. The community was left shaken by the brazen daylight shooting, and city officials spoke out, expressing their outrage at the senseless violence.
Weeks after the fatal shooting, a significant development brought a measure of hope for justice to the grieving family and concerned community. On August 31, 2023, the Alexandria Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect. Rae'Qwan McClinnahan, a 26-year-old who was not a resident of Alexandria, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a murder. Following his arrest, McClinnahan was held in custody without bond.
