In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Newport News, Virginia, a tragic event unfolded that would cut short the life of Alvin Eugene Holiday. On August 8, 2023, police were called to a residence on Stallings Court around 12:55 a.m. following reports of gunfire. Inside the home, officers discovered a grim scene: three men, including 61-year-old Alvin Eugene Holiday, had been shot and were pronounced deceased at the scene. The other two victims were identified as 60-year-old Monroe McGilvary Jr. and 36-year-old Derek Rico Jones. A woman who was also in the house at the time of the shooting was found unharmed and had been the one to call 911.
For months, the investigation into the triple homicide continued as family and friends mourned the loss of Holiday, a man remembered as a jovial and fun person with a big smile and an infectious laugh. He was a family-oriented man, a loving husband to his wife of 22 years, Roberta, and a proud father to their six children. Originally from Sarasota, Florida, he had spent most of his life in Virginia, graduating from Lafayette High School. He was employed as a Lead Banquet Server at the Williamsburg Inn at the time of his untimely death.
A significant development in the case came in April 2025. On April 16, U.S. Marshals, in collaboration with the Newport News police, arrested 26-year-old Dimair Jones in connection with the murders. Warrants for his arrest had been issued the previous day, and a tip led authorities to a hotel where he was staying. Jones was subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling. He is currently being held at the Newport News City Jail awaiting his first court appearance.
