On a late summer evening in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 18-year-old Davonte Kyle Burris was tragically cut short. On September 3, 2023, in the 500 block of Catina Way, gunshots shattered the night's quiet at approximately 8:37 p.m. Responding officers discovered that Burris, a resident of Hampton, had sustained at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene less than fifteen minutes later.
Investigations by the Newport News Police Department revealed a chilling
sequence of events. Burris had just exited a Lyft vehicle when an unidentified individual on a BMX-style bicycle approached and opened fire. After being shot, Burris managed to knock on the door of a nearby residence and entered the home before collapsing from his injuries.
Born in Albany, New York, on November 11, 2004, Davonte was known for his outgoing personality and his love for music and drawing. He had relocated to Virginia during his teenage years.
As of early 2024, the Newport News Police Department continues to seek the public's assistance in solving the homicide. Authorities have released surveillance video footage capturing the suspect on the bicycle entering the apartment complex and fleeing after the shooting. No information regarding a suspect or any arrests has been released to the public as the investigation remains ongoing.
