On a cold January evening, the life of 24-year-old Desire Alexandria Buggs of Woodbridge was cut short by a fatal gunshot wound. The tragic events unfolded on January 6, 2024, in the vicinity of Possum Point Road and Leonard Street in Dumfries, Virginia. It was her own husband, 24-year-old Daniel Okoe Lawson, who drove her to a local hospital where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Initially, Lawson attempted to deceive investigators with a fabricated story.
He claimed that a group of women had attacked them while they were stopped at a stop sign, and that one of these women had shot his wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat. However, as detectives delved deeper into the case, inconsistencies in his statements began to emerge. The turning point in the investigation came when an acquaintance of Lawson's informed the police that Lawson had asked them to remove a gun from his car while he was in the hospital waiting room.
Faced with mounting evidence, the narrative Lawson provided to detectives unraveled, and he was implicated in his wife's death. The weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered by law enforcement. Daniel Okoe Lawson was subsequently arrested on January 7, 2024, and faced serious charges, including felony murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
In March 2025, a jury found Daniel Lawson guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the death of his wife. While prosecutors had pursued a murder charge, the jury convicted him on the lesser offense. The Commonwealth's Attorney for Prince William County stated that the verdict was a critical step toward justice for Desire Buggs and her loved ones, and highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence. Lawson is scheduled to be sentenced for his crime on June 6, 2025.
