In the quiet town of Dumfries, Virginia, a heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded, forever altering the lives of a family already grappling with loss. On Wednesday, January 4, 2023, three-year-old Journee Javiah Carroll-Ward was killed in a shooting that also left four teenagers with life-threatening injuries. The young female victim and the injured teens, ranging in age from 14 to 17, were all related.
This violent act plunged the family into deeper sorrow, as they were still mourning the death of Journee's mother just the previous year.
The incident took place inside a residence where a hail of gunfire erupted, prompting concerned neighbors to call the police. One of the victims, a 17-year-old girl, was seen running from the house, screaming as the shots were fired. Neighbors rushed to her aid, finding a grim scene with blood everywhere. The wounded teen reportedly identified her boyfriend as the shooter. When law enforcement arrived, they discovered four more victims in the basement of the home. Emergency responders provided immediate first aid before the four injured teens were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. Tragically, young Journee was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities quickly identified 20-year-old Kenyatta Lee Oglesby as a person of interest and located him a short time later at a nearby location off of Richmond Highway, where he was taken into custody without incident. Oglesby was reportedly in a relationship with the 17-year-old victim who was shot multiple times. He was subsequently charged with one count of murder, four counts of aggravated malicious wounding, and five counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. It was also reported that Oglesby had a prior record, having previously pleaded guilty to carrying a firearm without a license. He was held without bond pending a future court date. Investigators recovered two firearms from the scene of the shooting.
