In the pre-dawn hours of July 30, 2024, the quiet of Vernon-hill, Virginia, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 35-year-old Travis Ragsdale, a Black male. The fatal encounter unfolded at a vacant residence on Thompson Store Road, where law enforcement would later find Ragsdale unresponsive on the ground, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene shortly after the 1:20 a.m. incident and pronounced him dead.
The investigation into Ragsdale's death continued for several weeks, with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office initially offering a reward for information leading to the perpetrator. Described by his grieving family as a selfless, kind, and driven individual who was always there to make someone smile, his loss left a profound void in their lives. His sister recalled the indescribable pain of receiving the news, a sentiment echoed by a family still reeling from other recent tragedies.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in late September with the arrest of 25-year-old Raqwan Thompson of South Carolina. Thompson was taken into custody in Richland County, South Carolina, following the execution of a search warrant by a collaborative effort of the Richland County Sheriff's Office, the Lexington County Sheriff's Office, and the South Carolina State Police. He has since been charged with Second Degree Murder and the Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. Following his arrest, Thompson was held without bond at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center as he awaited extradition back to Halifax County to face the charges against him.
