In the early morning hours of October 1, 2024, the life of 36-year-old Anthony Dwight Davis, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire outside his home on Water Gate Drive in Lynchburg, Virginia. At approximately 12:37 a.m., Lynchburg Police responded to reports of shots fired and discovered Davis suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of first responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Investigators found that Davis had been shot in the head while inside his vehicle, which had multiple bullet holes. A witness reported seeing a vehicle approach as Davis was getting into his car, from which several individuals emerged and opened fire in what appeared to be a coordinated ambush. A search of Davis's vehicle uncovered a handgun, two phones, and a bag containing a white powdery substance. Further investigation at his residence revealed additional firearms and recording devices. Family members, who remember him as a 'gentle giant' and a loving father of four, were left shattered by the unexpected violence.
The investigation into the homicide led to the eventual arrest of three suspects. Kevin Cantrell Brown Jr., 22, of Amherst, was taken into custody on January 2nd and charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and discharge of a firearm in public. Subsequently, arrest warrants were issued for 20-year-old Jayon Zykelse Phelps and 23-year-old Jermaine Shamont Hawkins Jr. on similar charges, with the addition of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Both Phelps and Hawkins were arrested shortly after. All three men are being held without bond at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail.
During a bond hearing for Kevin Brown in March 2025, prosecutors revealed a possible motive for the killing, stating the suspects knew Davis through his son, who had allegedly robbed one of them three years prior. The prosecution described the crime as premeditated, detailing how the suspects drove to Davis's home and fired more than 15 shots from high-caliber weapons. They alleged that after the shooting, the suspects fled to Greensboro, North Carolina, before returning to Lynchburg the next morning. The judge denied Brown's request for bond, citing the serious nature of the charges and the potential risk to the public. The cases against all three suspects are proceeding through the court system.
