In the winter of 2023, the life of a 40-year-old Black woman, Latoya Cynthia Coleman, was tragically cut short in Greenwood, South Carolina. On the evening of January 3rd, police responded to a call at the Phoenix Place apartments, where they discovered Coleman inside one of the units with a single gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene, and her death was swiftly ruled a homicide by the Greenwood County Coroner's Office.
The
investigation into Coleman's death moved quickly, and within a day, authorities had a suspect in custody. Randy Altomare, a 25-year-old man, was arrested and charged with her murder. He was also charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Investigators determined that Altomare and Coleman were acquaintances, though the specific nature of their relationship and the motive behind the fatal shooting were not immediately made public.
Following his arrest, Randy Altomare was denied bond and detained at the Greenwood County Detention Center. The case was then set to proceed through the judicial system.
