In the summer of 2021, the life of 21-year-old Quinton Marquisse Payne was tragically cut short. On the evening of Saturday, June 12th, Greenwood, South Carolina police responded to a call of shots fired at a residence on Klugh Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Payne inside the home, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and arms.
Despite the efforts of first responders to render aid, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Initial investigations suggested that an argument had taken place prior to the fatal shooting. For months, the case remained under active investigation as law enforcement worked to identify a suspect. Friends and family mourned the loss of Payne, remembering him as a cherished individual in their lives. The community was left seeking answers and justice for the young man whose life had been taken so violently.
In January 2022, a breakthrough in the case was announced. Quindaris Keondre Washington, then 21 years old, was charged with the murder of Quinton Payne. Washington was already incarcerated at the Greenwood County Detention Center on unrelated charges when he was served with the warrant for Payne's murder. The arrest brought a sense of progress to the investigation, though the community continued to grapple with the senseless violence that had occurred.
