In the quiet, early morning hours of July 22, 2023, in Belton, South Carolina, the life of 44-year-old Jonlee Chad Ricks, a White/Caucasian male, was violently cut short. Around 1:40 a.m., law enforcement and emergency services responded to a call on Dean Springs Road, where they found Ricks deceased from a gunshot wound to the chest. The Anderson County Deputy Coroner swiftly ruled his death a homicide.
Ricks, a local equipment operator and brick mason, was remembered as a dedicated tradesman.
The investigation by the Anderson County Sheriff's Office revealed a harrowing sequence of events that led to the fatal encounter. Earlier that morning, Ricks had been confronted by a group of individuals at a stop sign. During this initial confrontation, he was assaulted and robbed. The assailants fled the scene, only to return a short time later. This led to a second physical altercation, which tragically escalated to the point where Ricks was shot and killed.
The subsequent investigation led to the arrests of five individuals in connection with the crime that shook the Belton community. Roddriques Rashun Watson, 28, was charged with murder, accused of firing the fatal shot. Four others were also taken into custody on various charges related to the incident. Jenna Lee Ward, 27, was charged with criminal conspiracy and accessory before the fact to a felony. Charles Alexander Williams, 29, and Samuel Summers both faced charges of attempted armed robbery and criminal conspiracy. Additionally, 21-year-old Nevaeh McMillian was charged with accessory after the fact to a felony. Law enforcement officials indicated that the investigation was ongoing and that more charges could be forthcoming as they continued to seek justice for Jonlee Chad Ricks.
