In the early morning hours of July 28, 2023, the life of 30-year-old Maya Jennifer Simmons, a Black female and mother of eight from Ladson, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded around 2:19 a.m. in the parking lot of the Bloom Room, a restaurant on Dorchester Road in North Charleston. Simmons was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds and was quickly transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 3:00 a.m. Known affectionately as 'Maya' or 'MJ,' her sudden death sent shockwaves through her community.

The North Charleston Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. Roughly two weeks later, on August 11, 2023, a suspect turned herself in to the authorities. The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Kaisha Simmons Birch. Birch was subsequently charged with manslaughter and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

During Birch's bond hearing, her attorney put forth a claim of self-defense, asserting that Simmons had aggressively charged at Birch with a knife. This narrative was strongly contested by Maya Simmons' family, who insisted that she was unarmed and had not provoked the altercation. The motive for the fatal encounter appears to be rooted in a personal conflict, as witnesses suggested it may have stemmed from a dispute involving Tyrone Jones, who had recently ended a relationship with Birch and subsequently proposed to Simmons. It was reported that Birch became aware of Simmons' engagement celebration through social media and went to the Bloom Room to confront her.

Following the hearing, a judge set a $200,000 surety bond for Birch and placed her on house arrest. The conditions of her release also stipulated that she was to have no contact with Simmons' family and was prohibited from using social media. The case is still ongoing. Maya's family, particularly her grandmother, remembers her as a vibrant woman of faith who was deeply devoted to her children and had the ability to 'light up any room.' They continue to grieve their loss while awaiting justice for Maya.
