In the late hours of a Saturday in North Charleston, South Carolina, a vibrant, unauthorized concert tragically turned into a scene of chaos and violence, claiming the life of 14-year-old Ronjanae Olexia Smith. The tragic event unfolded on May 22, 2021, when a dispute escalated into gunfire, leaving a community in mourning and more than a dozen individuals wounded.
The concert, which had been promoted with promises of security, had a makeshift stage, a bar, and food vendors, but had been organized without the knowledge of city officials.
The evening's festivities were shattered when a fight broke out near the stage. The altercation quickly escalated to an exchange of gunfire between multiple individuals. In the ensuing panic, attendees scrambled for safety as bullets flew indiscriminately through the crowd. When first responders arrived at the chaotic scene near Piggly Wiggly and West Jimtown drives, they discovered numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds. In total, fourteen people were injured in the melee, but it was Ronjanae Olexia Smith who paid the ultimate price.
In the wake of the tragedy, the North Charleston Police Department launched an extensive investigation. Weeks of poring over evidence and conducting countless interviews with witnesses eventually led to a significant breakthrough. In early June 2021, authorities announced the arrests of four suspects in connection with the deadly shooting. Taekwon Cooper, Mancua Horback, Ty Robinson, and Malachi Wigg were all taken into custody. Each of the four men faced charges of manslaughter, among other offenses, for their alleged roles in the incident that cut short the life of a young girl and left a lasting scar on the community. Police indicated that the investigation was ongoing and that more arrests could be possible.
