In a tragic turn of events stemming from a years-long dispute, 17-year-old Dre’Von Riley was fatally shot on Sunday, September 24, 2023, in Columbia, South Carolina. The incident, which also claimed the lives of two other teenagers, unfolded in the afternoon as a group of young people were gathered in front of a vacant house on Saddletrail Road. The male victims were all students at Eau Claire High School.
The shooting was not a random act of violence but rather the culmination of an
ongoing feud, described by authorities as a 'beef' that had been simmering for a couple of years. On that Sunday afternoon, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the suspects reportedly arrived at the location and opened fire on the group. The sudden burst of gunfire resulted in the deaths of Riley, along with 16-year-old JaKobe Fanning and 16-year-old Caleb Wise. A fourth teenager, a 14-year-old middle school student, was also wounded in the attack but survived.
In the wake of the shooting, the Richland County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation that quickly led to the identification and arrest of three suspects. Two 17-year-olds, Karlos Damon Gibson and Jakeem Griffin, were taken into custody, along with a 14-year-old whose name has not been publicly released due to his age. All three have been charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. At least one of the suspects was also a student at Eau Claire High School.
