A quiet Friday morning hunt in the woods of Cameron, South Carolina, turned into a devastating tragedy for the family of Avery Davis. On November 24, 2023, the six-year-old boy was in an elevated deer stand with another child when a hunter on the ground fired his shotgun. A stray pellet from the blast struck Avery in the head.
His father immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Avery Davis succumbed to his injuries the following day. In the midst of their profound grief, his parents made the decision to donate his organs, an act that would ultimately save the lives of four other people.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources launched an investigation into the shooting. Authorities identified the shooter as a 17-year-old male. The SCDNR determined that the shooting was accidental. At the time of the initial reports, it was stated that the investigation was ongoing and a decision about whether to file criminal charges had not yet been made. No subsequent information regarding any arrests or charges being filed against the teenage shooter has been made publicly available.
