In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 7, 2025, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a North Charleston neighborhood, leaving one man clinging to life and another facing the gravest of charges. Shantwan Jamal Hoard, a 37-year-old Black male, was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 2600 block of Warm Avenue. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of the shooting shortly after 4:30 a.m.
Deputies arriving at the scene discovered the wounded Hoard, who was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency medical care.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Shantwan Hoard succumbed to his injuries the following day, on June 8, 2025. His death was officially ruled a homicide, prompting an intensive investigation by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. The swift actions of law enforcement at the scene of the shooting had already led to a significant development in the case. While still on Warm Avenue, deputies apprehended a suspect, 19-year-old Calvin Jerome Brown of North Charleston. The proximity of the arrest to the time and location of the shooting suggested a direct link to the crime.
Initially, Calvin Brown was charged with Attempted Murder and Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime. However, following Hoard's death, the charges against Brown were upgraded to Murder. The case has since entered the judicial system of Charleston County. Court records indicate that the initial Attempted Murder charge was dismissed as the case was transferred to the Court of General Sessions under a new case number for the Murder charge. As of late 2025, the murder case against Calvin Jerome Brown is listed as pending. The court has appointed a defendant's attorney and a solicitor to handle the prosecution, though a trial date has not yet been publicly announced. The motive for the shooting and the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter on Warm Avenue have not been released by authorities as the case proceeds through the legal process.
