In the quiet woods of Rembert, South Carolina, a grim discovery was made by a group of hunters on November 26, 2023. The body of 34-year-old Frederick Ricardo Nelson Jr., a male resident of Sumter, was found wrapped in bed sheets, a comforter, and a red tarp. An autopsy would later reveal that Nelson had been shot approximately 12 times.
The investigation into Nelson's death led authorities to 22-year-old Daejon Rashad Jackson, also of Sumter.
According to law enforcement, Jackson allegedly shot Nelson on or around November 14, 2023. It is believed that after the shooting, Jackson moved Nelson's body to the wooded area in an attempt to conceal the crime. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released.
Following an investigation that included interviews, the recovery of evidence, and analysis of telephone records and autopsy results, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division arrested Jackson. He was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. During a search of Jackson's residence related to the homicide investigation, authorities also discovered a substance that tested positive for fentanyl, leading to an additional charge of trafficking fentanyl. Jackson was taken into custody and booked at the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center. The case is set to be prosecuted by the 3rd Circuit Solicitor's Office.
