On a tragic Wednesday afternoon in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the life of 19-year-old Tayshaun Khalil Thompson was cut short by gun violence. The incident unfolded on February 21, 2024, around 12:25 p.m. in the Camp Croft community on Halsey Avenue. Authorities arrived at the scene to find a black Ford sedan where both Tayshaun and his cousin, Kenterrius Keesean Thompson, were discovered with gunshot wounds.
Tayshaun, a Black/African American male, was pronounced dead at the scene, while his cousin was transported to Spartanburg Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Known affectionately as 'Trap,' Tayshaun was a 2022 graduate of Union County High School, where he was celebrated for his athletic abilities, particularly in basketball. Those who knew him remembered a young man with a radiant smile and a warm and affectionate demeanor. His untimely death left his parents, Agnes Byrd and Pernell Thompson, along with his siblings and a large extended family, to mourn a future that was taken too soon. His family and friends are left with the memory of a gifted sportsman and a cherished individual.
In the wake of the shooting, the investigation led to the arrest of a 15-year-old suspect who was acquainted with both victims. The juvenile was taken into custody and is facing serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the altercation that led to Tayshaun's death remains unclear. The teenage suspect is currently being held at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice as the legal process moves forward.
