In the winter of 2019, the life of 39-year-old Belton Vindever Dandy was tragically cut short in Spartanburg, South Carolina. On the very first day of the new year, January 1st, Dandy was found deceased inside an apartment at the Camp Croft Courts on Hanover Place. An investigation by the Spartanburg Police Department and the coroner's office determined that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
The news of his violent passing sent ripples of grief and shock through his community and family.
In the days following the discovery of Dandy's body, investigators identified a person of interest, Brandon A. Arledge. What made the situation even more tragic for those who knew both men was that Arledge was described as a longtime family friend of Dandy; their acquaintance stretched back to childhood. This personal connection added a layer of betrayal to the sorrow felt by Dandy's loved ones. Arledge was subsequently arrested and faced charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. At his initial court appearance, he was denied bond, a decision that brought a measure of relief to the grieving family who feared for the safety of others.
The investigation into the circumstances leading to Dandy's death revealed a modern-day feud that played out on social media. In the weeks prior to the fatal encounter, both Dandy and Arledge had been engaged in a heated online dispute, exchanging threats on Facebook Live. This virtual animosity tragically spilled over into the real world when the two men crossed paths at the apartment complex. At the time of the shooting, Arledge was on probation for an unrelated crime and was armed with a handgun, anticipating a confrontation.
Initially, Arledge denied his presence at the scene of the crime. However, crucial evidence in the form of a baseball hat found next to Dandy's body linked him to the murder. DNA analysis confirmed a high probability that the hat belonged to Arledge, and it was the same hat he had been seen wearing in his Facebook Live videos. Faced with the evidence against him, Brandon A. Arledge pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. In October 2021, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the killing of Belton Dandy. He will be eligible for release after serving 85% of his sentence.
