In the quiet community of Ladson, South Carolina, the life of 20-year-old Omarion Lemont Brown was tragically cut short on the evening of Saturday, April 13, 2024. The young man's life came to a violent end when he was shot and his body was later discovered inside his vehicle, which had been deliberately set on fire. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a vehicle fire, and upon extinguishing the blaze, they made the grim discovery of human remains inside. Due to the condition of the body, immediate identification and cause of death were not readily apparent.
The victim was soon identified as Omarion Lemont Brown. In the days following the discovery, his mother, Monique Sawyer, shared that her son had been working, making deliveries for DoorDash, on the day he was killed. She had been able to track his last known location through a tracking app they both used. The family's grief was palpable as they remembered a young man with a memorable smile who had graduated from Fort Dorchester High School in 2022 and had aspirations of becoming a longshoreman.
The investigation into Omarion Brown's death led to the arrest of 17-year-old Zion Vaughn. Prosecutors revealed that the initial motive for the encounter was robbery. It is alleged that Vaughn shot Brown and then drove the vehicle, with Brown's body still inside, to the location in Ladson where it was subsequently set ablaze. Vaughn has been charged with murder and, despite his age, will be tried as an adult. During a bond hearing on May 1, 2024, a judge denied bond for the teenage suspect. The case is set to proceed through the court system, with future hearings scheduled in St. George.
