On a Tuesday evening, September 27, 2022, the life of 24-year-old Tymel Howard was cut short in Ladson, South Carolina. He was a Black/African American male. Reports of gunshots drew North Charleston Police to the Cypress River Apartments on Blue House Road around 9:30 p.m. As officers arrived, they witnessed a vehicle speeding away from the scene.
Inside a car, they discovered Howard's lifeless body.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Howard, a resident of Summerville, died from gunshot wounds. In the initial stages of the investigation, police conducted a protective sweep of Howard's apartment. The North Charleston Police Department has since urged the public to come forward with any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for his death. They have made appeals for anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers, offering the possibility of a reward for information that results in an arrest.
To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the investigation remains active. In the months following the incident, Howard's estate, represented by Lonnie Howard, filed a lawsuit against Cypress River Apartments and other entities. This legal action, initiated in December 2022, is part of the ongoing efforts to seek accountability for the circumstances that led to his death.
