Fourteen-year-old Markayla Aiyonna Roberts was a promising freshman at Allendale-Fairfax High School, where she excelled in her studies as an honor student and a member of the Beta Club. She was a proud cadet in the JROTC program and had recently been promoted to Sergeant. Known for her bright smile and vibrant personality, she enjoyed painting, drawing, and spending time with her family.
In the early morning hours of April 27, 2024, tragedy struck the Fairfax, South Carolina community.
While Markayla was sleeping at her grandmother's mobile home, a stray bullet penetrated the residence and struck her in the head. She was rushed to the Allendale County Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. At the time of the incident, she was sleeping alongside her sister and her 11-month-old cousin.
The death of Markayla sent shockwaves through the community, prompting calls for an end to gun violence from local leaders and residents. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation into the shooting. However, as of late October 2024, nearly six months after her death, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The lack of progress in the case has been a source of frustration and anger for her family and the wider community, who continue to mourn the loss of a young life full of potential.
