On a Wednesday morning in August 2024, the body of 33-year-old Stephanie Campbell was discovered by a resident on the side of Langford Road, a dirt road on Saint Helena Island, South Carolina. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office responded to the report, which came in around 9:15 a.m. on August 21, 2024, and found Campbell deceased from what was later determined to be multiple gunshot wounds.
The Beaufort County Coroner's Office ruled her death a homicide, estimating the time of death to be sometime that morning.
The investigation into the death of the Beaufort woman, described by her family as a gifted student and a kindhearted friend, quickly led authorities to a person of interest. Investigators identified 41-year-old Anthony Alfrado Brown of Saint Helena Island as one of the last people to have seen Campbell alive. At the time Campbell's body was found, Brown was already a suspect in an armed robbery that had occurred earlier that same day at a Circle K on Lady's Island. He was taken into custody on August 23, 2024, in connection with the robbery.
After a months-long investigation, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office announced in December 2024 that they had charged Anthony Alfrado Brown with the murder of Stephanie Campbell. In addition to the murder charge, Brown was also charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was served with the arrest warrants while already incarcerated at the Beaufort County Detention Center on charges related to the armed robbery.
