On August 23, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at the Sumter Palmetto Inn on North Washington Street in Sumter, South Carolina, involving 16-year-old Ny'Heem Dashaun Burgess and his 18-year-old half-sister, Kaneshia Commander. The two teens were critically wounded in what police initially described as the mishandling of a gun.
