In the quiet, early morning hours of September 15, 2024, the life of 23-year-old Tyshaun J. Johnson was tragically cut short in his hometown of Darlington, South Carolina. A Black male, Johnson was fatally shot around 1:33 a.m. in the downtown area, along the 100 block of South Main Street. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they discovered Johnson unresponsive. The Darlington County Coroner, Todd Hardee, pronounced him dead at approximately 2:30 a.m.
In the chaotic moments that followed the shooting, Johnson's vehicle collided with a nearby building, adding another layer of tragedy to the incident.
The Darlington Police Department, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division immediately began an investigation into the shooting. The scene drew a large crowd, necessitating a significant law enforcement presence to maintain order. Their investigation swiftly led to a suspect, and Marquis Alexander McGill was arrested in connection with Johnson's death. McGill was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was subsequently booked into the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center, where a judge denied him bond, ensuring he would remain in custody as the legal process moves forward.
The community of Darlington mourned the loss of the young man, who was affectionately known as 'Ty'. He was remembered as a decorated and celebrated student-athlete at Darlington High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. A celebration of his life was held on September 21, 2024, at the Darlington High School Gymnasium, a place that held many memories of his athletic achievements. Following the service, he was laid to rest at Faith Memorial Gardens.
