Si’dreek Maurice Player, a 16-year-old Black male, was on the verge of a personal milestone when his life was taken. A student at the Darlington-Lee Adult Education Center in Darlington, South Carolina, he was just one week away from earning his GED.
On the afternoon of October 10, 2023, Si’dreek was in a parking lot on the school’s campus when he was fatally shot.
Authorities later stated that the shooting appeared to be drug and gang-related and might have been connected to a crash that happened four days earlier. The sheriff also noted a belief that Si'dreek was connected to another shooting that had occurred earlier that month.
The investigation led to an arrest nearly three weeks later. Police took Quinton McLeroy Jr. into custody after a short foot chase and charged him with murder, criminal conspiracy, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and receiving stolen goods. Following his arrest, a judge denied him bond.
While awaiting trial at the Darlington County Detention Center, McLeroy faced an additional charge of possession of contraband. The new charge came after social media posts, reportedly filmed inside the jail, surfaced showing him throwing what appeared to be Blood gang signs.
However, the case took a significant turn nearly two and a half years after the shooting. On April 14, 2026, the 4th Circuit Solicitor's Office dropped all charges against Quinton McLeroy Jr. Prosecutors entered a nolle prosequi with leave to restore for the murder charge, which means the charge could be reinstated pending further law enforcement investigation. As of June 2026, the case remains unsolved.
