In the late afternoon of August 14, 2017, the life of 19-year-old Tyrell McCain, a Black male from Darlington, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded on Southern Pine Street, where McCain sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Authorities were summoned to the scene around 4:18 p.m. following reports of shots being fired in the neighborhood.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered the young man's body.
The Darlington Police Department, in conjunction with the Darlington County Coroner's Office, launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Despite the violent nature of McCain's death, the official investigation concluded that there was no evidence of foul play.
Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee, along with the police, determined that the death was not a homicide. Consequently, no arrests were made in connection with the case, and no suspects were ever publicly identified or sought. The investigation was closed without any criminal charges being filed. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young life under circumstances that, while tragic, were not deemed to be the result of a criminal act by another person.
