In the spring of 2023, a violent encounter in Starkville, Mississippi, ended the life of Kirby Sherman, a 31-year-old man. On the evening of April 4th, the Starkville Police Department received a call about shots being fired at the Blake Court Townhouses on Louisville Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Sherman, who was unresponsive and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. The following day, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force, authorities apprehended Tyshawn Henley, an 18-year-old from the nearby city of Columbus. Initially, investigators believed the homicide occurred during a robbery, which led to a charge of capital murder against Henley.

As the legal process moved forward, the case against Henley progressed. In October of 2024, Henley, who had since turned 20, appeared in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of first-degree murder. Following his plea, the presiding judge sentenced him to life in prison. In a statement following the resolution of the case, Starkville Police Chief Mark Ballard lamented the role of 'drugs, cash and guns' as consistent factors in the senseless loss of life in the area.
