In a tragic and violent confrontation on February 20, 2025, 25-year-old Vershawn Orlando Williams, a male from Columbus, Mississippi, was killed in a shootout in Starkville. The fatal incident, which also resulted in the death of 27-year-old Robert Mayfield of Memphis, Tennessee, unfolded in the parking lot of the Quality Inn on Highway 12. The event was not a random act of violence, as all individuals involved knew one another.

The altercation began inside a vehicle behind the hotel, involving Williams, Mayfield, and a woman who was identified as Williams' girlfriend and Mayfield's cousin. Tensions escalated into a physical fight among the three outside the car. Following the initial struggle, Mayfield returned to the vehicle and attempted to drive away. It was at this point that both he and Williams, who was outside the car, exchanged gunfire. Both men sustained fatal injuries during the shootout.

Following the exchange of shots, Mayfield managed to drive to a nearby State Urgent Care for medical assistance, while Williams remained in the hotel parking lot. Both men were subsequently transported to OCH Regional Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. The woman who was with them was not physically harmed during the incident.

The investigation by the Starkville Police Department, aided by witness statements and camera footage, concluded that Williams and Mayfield fatally shot each other. Consequently, no arrests were made in connection with their deaths. The incident was further complicated by the fact that at the time of his death, Williams had an active warrant for his arrest from the Columbus Police Department for the alleged kidnapping and aggravated assault of his girlfriend just days prior to the shooting.
