Rash believes that when Bankhead discovered the teenager, Cornelius attempted to flee, and it was then that Bankhead shot him in the back as he was trying to climb a fence. However, the family of Andrew Bankhead presents a starkly different account of that fateful day. They contend that the incident was not a matter of a teenage love affair gone wrong, but rather a case of a homeowner defending his property. According to Bankhead’s cousin, Julius Voss, his cousin was in the shower when he heard a noise. Voss stated that someone was seen on security footage entering Bankhead's home by pushing an air conditioning unit through a window. Bankhead’s family denies that he has a 15-year-old daughter. In their telling, Bankhead acted in self-defense against an intruder.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Clarksdale Police Department responded to a call of a residential burglary. Upon their arrival, they found Cornelius McGee Jr. deceased. Due to the involvement of a former officer, the investigation was quickly turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. The MBI has stated that the shooting is not considered an 'officer-involved shooting' as Bankhead had resigned from the police force prior to the incident.
