In the late afternoon of New Year's Eve 2023, a verbal dispute at the intersection of 7th Street and Leflore Avenue in Clarksdale, Mississippi, escalated into deadly violence. Demetrius Curtis, a 36-year-old Black male, was shot multiple times. When Clarksdale police officers arrived at the scene around 3:12 p.m., they found Curtis in the street, where he was pronounced dead. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing an argument between Curtis and another man just before the gunshots rang out.
The investigation into the death of Demetrius Curtis moved swiftly, and just a few days later, on January 3, 2024, an arrest was made. The Clarksdale Police Department took 44-year-old James Bryant into custody in connection with the shooting. Bryant was subsequently charged with murder.
Following his arrest, James Bryant appeared in court for a bond hearing. Citing the nature of the charges against him, the judge denied bond, and Bryant was ordered to be held in custody. The case was then scheduled to be presented to the Coahoma County Grand Jury for consideration of an indictment. The shooting was one of two homicides that occurred in Clarksdale over the New Year's holiday, prompting concern within the community about the prevalence of gun violence.
