In the small town of Soso, Mississippi, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal encounter for 41-year-old Jason Adam Marshall, a White/Caucasian male. On December 27, 2023, Marshall, who had recently made an unsuccessful bid for mayor, went to the home of his ex-wife. His arrival was in violation of a domestic protection order she had obtained against him in October of that year.
The protective order prohibited Marshall from possessing firearms and required him to undergo a
psychological evaluation to regain visitation rights with his three children. Despite this, he was armed with a 9mm pistol when he arrived at the residence. His brother-in-law, Christopher Davis, who lived next door, confronted him. When Marshall reportedly reached for his weapon, Davis, armed with an AR-15 rifle, fired multiple shots. Marshall died at the scene. The couple's three children were inside the home at the time of the incident.
The Soso Police Department's initial investigation suggested that the shooting was an act of self-defense. There was a history of violent incidents involving Marshall, including a prior threat against Davis with a firearm. As of late 2024, no charges had been filed against Christopher Davis, and the investigation into Marshall's death was still considered ongoing. Marshall was known in the community as a volunteer firefighter, an alderman, and the owner of a disaster relief company.
