In the late hours of a Saturday night in Canton, Mississippi, a verbal dispute tragically escalated, leading to the death of 47-year-old Troy Waldrep. The incident occurred on July 19, 2025, at the Camden Park Apartments on Parkview Drive. Waldrep was in a car with the girlfriend of James Ross and her uncle, returning from a party when the altercation unfolded.
According to Canton Police Chief Otha Brown, Ross, 33, was waiting for his girlfriend at the apartment complex. An argument broke out, and Ross allegedly brandished a firearm, shooting Waldrep once in the face. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Waldrep succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported for medical attention.
Following the shooting, Ross fled the scene but was later apprehended by the Ridgeland Police Department without incident. He has been charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm within city limits. Ross is currently being held without bond at a local detention facility as the investigation continues. Friends and acquaintances of Waldrep described him as a person who easily moved between different communities and was a dedicated Information Technology professional.
