In the quiet Sunset Subdivision of Starkville, Mississippi, the evening of March 29, 2024, was shattered by the sound of gunfire, leaving a community in mourning and a family grieving the loss of 19-year-old Jequarius Spencer. A Black male, Spencer was fatally wounded in a shooting that occurred on the 100 block of Bennet Drive.
Shortly after 8 p.m., the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Office received calls reporting shots fired in the area.
Spencer, suffering from a single gunshot wound, was rushed to the OCH Regional Medical Center in a private vehicle. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide, led by the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Department, quickly pointed to a suspect. Austin Hudson, a 22-year-old resident of Starkville, was identified and arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Hudson was subsequently charged with one count of first-degree murder and booked into the Oktibbeha County Jail.
During his initial court appearance on March 30, 2024, a judge denied bond for Hudson, ensuring he would remain in custody as the legal process moves forward.
