In the spring of 2024, the life of a young Black man, 19-year-old Shavarion Jaleel Ross, was cut tragically short in Jackson, Mississippi. On the evening of April 23rd, events unfolded in the 300 block of North Flag Chapel Road that would end in fatal violence. Officers were called to the scene where they discovered Ross suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The initial investigation into the shooting was met with few immediate answers, and the Jackson Police Department urged anyone with information to come forward. For six months, detectives worked the case, seeking to piece together the circumstances that led to the young man's death. The community was left to mourn the loss, with family and friends gathering for funeral services at Fearns Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in nearby Flora, Mississippi, to remember a life taken too soon.
A significant breakthrough in the investigation came on October 22, 2024, when Jackson police made an arrest. After a lengthy investigation, authorities took 21-year-old Xavier Lampkin into custody and charged him with the murder of Shavarion Ross. While a suspect was finally behind bars, the motive for the shooting was not disclosed by officials. Lampkin was subsequently held at the Hinds County Detention Center with his bond set at a substantial $1.5 million. The investigation into the death of Shavarion Ross is considered ongoing, as the legal process moves forward.
