In the quiet community of Moss Point, Mississippi, a Sunday morning was shattered by the sound of gunfire, leaving a family and community to grapple with a sudden and tragic loss. On April 28, 2024, Lorenzo Walley Jr., a 46-year-old male, was found deceased outside a residence on Diamond Street. The cause of his untimely death was a fatal gunshot wound. The discovery was made after Moss Point Police received a 911 call at approximately 9:20 a.m. reporting that a man had been shot. Upon their arrival, they found Mr. Walley's body, and the grim reality of the situation began to unfold.

The investigation into the death of Lorenzo Walley Jr. quickly zeroed in on a person of interest. Eyewitnesses at the scene were able to provide crucial information to law enforcement, identifying a potential suspect and his likely whereabouts. The man they named was Douglas Bowens, a 31-year-old resident of Moss Point who lived just across the street from where the incident occurred. Witnesses reported seeing Bowens enter his own home shortly after the shooting, and then later flee into the wooded area behind his residence, sparking an intensive manhunt.

A coordinated effort involving the Moss Point Police Department, Pascagoula Police, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, and the local FBI office led to the establishment of a perimeter around the woods where Bowens was believed to be hiding. The search culminated in Bowens' apprehension after he emerged from the woods and appeared at a neighbor's front door. He was taken into custody without incident, bringing an end to the brief but tense manhunt. Following his arrest, Douglas Bowens was charged with the murder of Lorenzo Walley Jr. and was transported to the Jackson County jail to await legal proceedings.
