In the quiet town of Moss Point, Mississippi, a young man's life was cut short in a fatal confrontation that unfolded on the evening of Thursday, September 21, 2023. Jayrell Cox, an 18-year-old male, died from a gunshot wound sustained during what authorities are investigating as an attempted home invasion.

The incident occurred in the 6200 block of Elder Ferry Road. A homeowner reported to investigators that he discovered two armed individuals under his carport as he exited his house. While retreating back inside, the two men allegedly tried to force their way into the residence. This led to an exchange of gunfire between the homeowner and the two suspects.

Following the shootout, both suspects fled the scene on foot, disappearing into the neighboring yards. The homeowner was not immediately aware that he had hit either of the individuals during the confrontation. It wasn't until the next morning, at approximately 11 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023, that the unfortunate outcome of the previous night's events came to light. A resident in the area discovered a deceased male in her backyard and alerted the authorities.

Investigators determined that the deceased individual was Jayrell Cox and that he was one of the two suspects from the attempted home invasion. It is believed that after being shot, Cox fled until he collapsed and succumbed to his injuries in the nearby yard. The Moss Point Police Department is actively investigating the case, which will be presented to a Jackson County Grand Jury. There have been no public announcements regarding the identity or arrest of the second suspect involved in the incident.
